Food Availability free essay sample

Identify and discuss a range of historical and contemporary factors which influence the availability of a popular staple food. This essay will consider the influence of historical and contemporary factors on such staple food as ‘’rice’’. The historical factors that have influence the ability of rice include migration of cultural groups, cash crop farming and farming technology. The contemporary changes of rice will include social, technology, political and economic. Before the Europeans arrived, Australian Aborigines people used hunting and gathering methods to collect food. Native foods were being known such as plants, animals and insects. Firstly, one of the most important historical factors that have influence the ability of rice is migration. Rice was introduced after Australia started to accept migrants from Asia. When people move from one country to another they bring the knowledge ‘’food’’ that they had with them. Therefore, rice has become popular because it is easily steamed or boiled and is eaten at all meals. The family influence had taught the young family members the culture and beliefs about rice such as how to cook and eat. Secondly, cash crop farming is a type of farming for the purpose of making profit. A transnational company is a large company whose business dealings operate in many counties. Local people work the land and receive an income. For example, the famers will get a higher paid to grow things on the farm that being requested by the companies but the disadvantage is its high to start but then de-values. So, the lack of rice had been struggling in Australia. Thirdly, farming technology. Rice is a very hard staple food because it takes about 2-3 months to grow. Farmers used to use animals such as buffaloes or cows to help them farm. It’s tiring and uses lots of energy but it’s still convenience for people every day needs. Nowadays, Developed countries like Australia uses the knowledge of food production and processing to help to increase the availability of food. Social is influences by society which means that the variety of people inspire what we eat. We are now more understanding of the cultures and lifestyles as we are living in a multicultural world. Australian started to get to know more foods such as Asian, Italian, Mexican, etc For example, we all know that Asian countries such as China have rice for their everyday meals. We also know that rice goes with every meals and can be eaten with soup and people influence this to one to another. In addition, technology influences microwaves and rice-cookers which mean that we are being able to cook rice faster and easier. For example, you can go out to buy a package of frozen rice and microwaved it for 3 minutes or you can use a rice cooker to cook by putting your rice in and press start. As there are many choices you can keep it warm for a very long hours, non-sticky rice or quick cook. It saves time and labour. Where we look back 200 years ago, we did not have the ability to cook rice like the new technology. Plus, Marketplace is where consumers purchase rice from. The accessibility has been changed because we are able to plant rice ourselves. We have a choice to purchase such as online payments, shopping under one roof and the stores are located most of the places. Also, it’s cheaper than importing rice from overseas. Moreover, the political is a system of government in a country. The Australian government has a protection policy and a control on food imports of foreign products to achieve the goal. The government decides whether to let where rice imported from. For example, back in time, we were not able to import rice into our country because of our restrictions and low economic. To sum up, Economics of food means that people have money to buy food. Without money developing countries won’t have food available. But because we are living in a developed country we are able to have a high living standard compared to the poor countries. Rice is cheap in Australia therefore the lower the prices are the most people tend to spend the money. This money will be recycling. In conclusion, the influence of historical and contemporary factors on a staple food ‘’rice’’ that I’ve made above such as migrants, farming technology, cash crops, social, and technology, political and economic had changed Australia rapidly.

Batteries essays

Batteries essays As a child growing up, I was familiar with two types of batteries: the D size that was used in flashlights and the AA that was used for everything else. In todays society, technology is constantly changing and batteries are now becoming more and more advanced. We have seen the emergence of rechargeable batteries, lithium batteries, nickel cadmium batteries, nickel metal hydride batteries, lithium ion batteries, cordless power tool batteries, medical equipment batteries, batteries for communications, electronics, video, security devices, power tools, home appliances, battery powered toys, memory back-up and mobility. . Rechargeable batteries can only be re-charged so many times and the need for electricity is diminishing as batteries are becoming more powerful. They are now seen as a chokepoint in the use of alternative energy. Three sources of energy that I will focus on are Nickel Metal-Hydride, the new and improved Lithium Ion and Fuel Cells. Nickel Metal-Hydride (NiMH) batteries were introduced in the early 1990's as the new high-tech replacement over older chemistries like Nickel Cadmium (NiCd). Although they may have a very slight memory effect, NiMH batteries are much more reliable than previous chemistries. Compared to a NiCd battery of equal size, a NiMh battery will run for 30-40% longer on each charge. NiMH batteries can also be recharged 60% in just 15 minutes. Longer Nickel Metal Hydride batteries stay powered up longer, have no memory to drain and are environmentally friendly: mercury-free. Most new laptop computers and cordless phones are equipped with these cells now. One disadvantage of this battery is that its very sensitive to overcharging and complete discharging. The self discharge rate is very high so its not a good idea to leave them sitting around for even a couple of weeks. The introduction of lithium-ion technology represented a breakthrough in safety from the old lithium metal batteries. Lit...

Business Strategy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 3

Business Strategy - Essay Example Jayesh (2012) further added that strategic alliances differ from mergers and acquisitions on the aspect that under strategic alliances, the partner companies maintain their autonomy or independence, which is not usually the case under mergers and acquisitions. Secondly, companies that form strategic alliances are not usually involved in direct competition but rather they offer related products and/ or services that are directed towards similar target consumers. According to Dorata (2012), there are various forms of strategic alliances and they include direct cooperation, which is the most common. The second form of strategic alliance is joint ventures whereby different companies come together and form a separate entity that they jointly own and manage together. The other form of strategic alliance is minority investments mostly in new and fast growing business organisations. Advantages Dorata (2012) in his writings listed the most common advantages of strategic alliances of which one of them is the fact that it enables companies to offer a wide variety of goods and/ or services to their consumers without incurring huge cost or spending lengthy durations in developing new products. Secondly, Dorata (2012) noted that businesses usually enter into strategic alliances to obtain competitive advantages that they would not have otherwise obtained if they operated on a solo basis. Therefore, strategic alliances enable businesses to expand more rapidly while still maintaining their autonomy unlike mergers and acquisitions strategy. Consequently, it is correct to assert that strategic alliances enable businesses to expand its customer base since it is able to reach a wide target market. Specifically to the car industry, Jayesh (2012) stated that among the companies that have recorded competitive advantages because of strategic alliances include Fuji and Toyota, which have jointly cooperated in various projects. Fuji gained an advantage from its strategic alliance with To yota based on the research and development that was conducted by Toyota that lead to the development of the Toyota’s gas-electric Prius hybrid model. Because of their strategic alliance, Fuji was also able to develop their first Subaru hybrid mainly based on the Toyota technology that was used in the manufacture of first gas-electric car (Hill, 2010). Another strategic alliance in the car industry is the one between Fiat and Chrysler that enabled the two companies to share their technology, distribution channels, and vehicle platforms. This strategic alliance was viewed to be of much benefit to Chrysler, which was struggling financially at the time when both companies where entering a strategic alliance and therefore, it was able to gain added advantages without losing its independence despite its financial position at that time (Hill, 2010). Another example of strategic alliance that demonstrated the advantages of strategic alliance over mergers and acquisition is the one be tween General Motors and Fiat that enabled both companies to benefit from reduced cost of operating, common architecture and platforms, increased efficiency in financial service operations, and cross-sharing of automotive technologies (Hill, 2010). Disadvantages According to the writings by Dorata (2012), the key disadvantage of strategic alliance is because of the fact that neither of the companies gains

Critical Thinking and Ethics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1

Critical Thinking and Ethics - Essay Example This is because what can be seen as ethical in a particular situation may be viewed as unethical in a different context. Location or culture of communities also illustrates significant roles in understanding the ethical considerations relevant to that situation. This process is greatly improved through critical thinking applications. To give an instance in business ethics, a practice or product acceptable in one culture can be totally unacceptable in a different culture. Also, some cultures ethically embrace women in the workplace, but other cultures discriminate at women at the workplace. Critical thinking application, enable individuals understand situation so as to develop appropriate ethical considerations in a particular context (Moore, 2012). Critical thinking is connected to ethics through diverse thinking of individuals in relation to approaching ethical issues or practices. Individual eliminate the most probable approaches; this is until (s) he reaches or settles on the most appropriate approach for the given situation (Moore, 2012). Critical thinking is also linked to ethics through considerations of approaches individuals utilize in differentiating personal ethical concepts with organizational ethical concepts. Individuals have unique ethical considerations; they must separate these from organization’s concepts. Ethical decision making is important regardless of adherence to rule of logic. This is because ethical issues differ from one context or environment to another (Solomon, 2004). Decisions should be made in accordance to the acceptable practices of the applicable or relevant organization and

MRIs and Other Issues in Medicine Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

MRIs and Other Issues in Medicine - Essay Example An X-Ray is also used to image internal structures of the body, but opposed to an MRI, an X-Ray is a type of high-energy radiation. X-Rays are made of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between ultraviolet and gamma rays, and are most often used in low doses for making images of internal body structures and in higher doses for treating cancer. A CT Scan (CAT Scan) is again, another form of viewing the internal structures of a person's body. CT Scans are in fact a computerized series of X-Rays, which can reveal tumors and small strokes in the brain. A computer is used to generate a three dimensional image, which are then analyzed and displayed for diagnostic purposes. An MRI is most often used for studying nerves, muscles, ligaments, bones, and other tissues in the body. Problems such as a disc herniation in the spine or masses or tumors within soft tissues are seen well on an MRI image. MRIs are most helpful and most commonly used by orthopedic surgeons; an MRI is particularly helpful at diagnosing many common orthopedic problems. Therefore the most probable explanation as to why and MRI would be ordered is if orthopedic problems are perceived to exist in a patient. What Would it be an Appropriate Situation for an MRI not to be Done There are several proper explanations for why an MRI would not be ordered for a patient. Firstly, an MRI is not the most accurate test. Although an MRI is useful in the diagnosis of many conditions, it is not 100% accurate in all cases, which means sometimes the problem will not show up in the MRI. Another primary reason as to why an MRI might not be ordered is because an MRI is usually "not the first step." (Cluett, 2006). In other words, there are other steps which should be taken in an attempt to figure out the problem, rather than immediately ordering an MRI. Lastly but certainly no less importantly, is the fact that an MRI is only a diagnostic test, and not a treatment. "An MRI gives some people peace of mind, but will do nothing to change the symptoms of your condition." (Cluett, 2006). Are There any Limitations on an MRI Although MRIs have major technological advantages when compared to other imaging modalities, there are also certain limitations which are present. Disadvantages are there, such as the fact that because of the small bore of the magnet, some patients experience claustrophobia and often have difficulty cooperating in the study. As well, some obese patients cannot be studied by an MRI. Patient throughput is also slower than comparative imaging

Company Communication Issue

Company Communication Issue Intro. Since 2013 the company has received reports that some consumers may not be pleased with Huggies diapers because they felt scary due to a supposed chemical burn on the skin. I as the chief communication director have instructed the public relations department to do a media content analysis in order to determine the real situation or impact. Through content analysis, we will be able to do a qualitative research focusing on the interpretation of some editorials, magazines, websites, blogs, social media, forums, etc. Content analysis is the systematic and objective categorizing of information, in public relations, this is used to measure the amount of media coverage and the nature of that coverage (Wilcox, Cameron, Reber, 2014). Content analysis enables public relations departments to reinforce responsive communication by including some factors such as the percentage of favorable, neutral, negative mentions about a company, a brand or service, the overall tone of mention, the percentage of articles that contain a key message point that some organization wants to communicate (Wilcox, Cameron, Reber, 2014). Body. After a study carried out through different sources, the public relations department took a sampling of media data categorized by type as follows. Conclusions. The problem is that there are reports of some websites that express complaints from some customers that the honeycombs are causing burns due to some chemical component. Actually, according to the media content analysis made, no conclusive evidence has been found this is really happening. Instead, the findings show that the brand has been gaining the trust of the final consumers over time. Kimberly-Clark Corp has been interested in innovation, earning some awards. The brand has educational programs for the use of the product in order to prevent misuse. They enforce the campaign about their passion for helping all babies, especially the smallest and most fragile like premature ones. The findings reaffirm that the company is doing a great positive publicity job for the brand, raising it to the second level of popularity in the United States. This work is reflected in sales portals such as diapers.com in which consumer feedbacks reflect an 85% satisfaction with the brand. I do not think these complaints will affect the brands prestige or its positioning in the market, I think the brand is strong enough to deal with it. I would recommend to the CEO to keep the eyes on these forums so that we follow up the possible increase of these complaints, and can proactively prevent any damage to the brand. At the moment it is not recommended to invest more than what is done so far in some positive image campaign to counter these rumors. Reference sources page Wilcox, D. L., Cameron, G. T., Reber, B. H. Essay --

Eight people are invited to Indian Island, a piece of land that a famous movie star millionaire is said to have purchased. The one thing all these people have in common is that they were all somehow involved in someone’s death. Soon they all learn that they were tricked into coming to the island which will result in their certain deaths. In every persons’ bedroom there was a poem that hinted at how each was going to die, and ten porcelain figures on the dining room table that mysteriously disappear with each death. One of them was the murderer because there was no one else on the island, leading to suspicion, accusations, and chaos. In the end it was learned that two of the characters on the island did in fact plan all the deaths, but one threatens to tell people. In turn, Lawrence Wargrave kills him off. He was punishing these people for crimes they had committed then he himself committed suicide. In And Then There Were None, Agatha Christie develops the theme â€Å"o ne must atone for their sins† through the use of symbolism, setting, and internal conflict. In the novel, Christie utilizes symbolism to develop to the theme. Both the violent storm and the china figure represent many different things ranging from death to the character’s backgrounds. The fierce weather symbolizes the violent acts that took place on Indian Island and previous faults the characters had committed. General Macarthur for example was pinned with the death of one of his soldiers. He sent the man to a brutal fight knowing that he would die. Also, the vicious storm is representative of the murders that were occurring on the island. The porcelain Indian figures embodied each of the ten people on the island. As a person dies, one of the men mysteriously disappears... ...money she lost not only Cyril, but her boyfriend. This event left her in an almost depressed position. The image of him drowning is constantly on her mind whilst on the island where she is very often left alone to just her thoughts. Near the end she had begun regretting what she did. The memory and guilt of her actions affect her so much, she committed suicide. This in turn was her punishment for plotting the death of an innocent boy. Furthermore her internal conflicts lead her to the retribution of her actions. As seen through the use of symbolism, setting, and internal conflict, Agatha Christie has created the theme â€Å"no wrongdoing goes unpunished† in And Then There Were None. Each of the characters paid for their sins through death on Indian Island. Each character either took their own life, due to the regret of their actions or by it was done by an outside force.
